Why did you apply for the Coloplast Master Thesis Programme?

The combination of business and academia in a master thesis written on a real life business case creates greater value for both the student and the company. Moreover, we find the med-tech industry highly interesting because of its exponential growth, and we wanted to become better acquainted with Coloplast

What are you writing about in your thesis?

The overall scope of our thesis is to develop an accelerated go-to-market strategy in the US for Peristeen, a brand within the continence care category. More specifically, we are investigating how Coloplast can ensure that SCI patients in the US in need of bowel irrigation have access to Peristeen.

How was the process?

It was very exciting and challenging. Through the investigation of a completely unfamiliar field, we experienced a steep learning curve. We learnt about bowel management, spinal cord injury consumers and the US healthcare system.

What do you like about the programme?

What we liked the most about the programme is that we had the opportunity to work on a real life case, with people who have many years of business experience. Coloplast’s network has been an important asset while writing our thesis, and the support from our sponsor and colleagues has been valuable. Furthermore, we have made new acquaintances and friends, both employees at the HQ in Humlebæk and in the US, nurses, spinal cord injury consumers, and other students participating in the programme.

What now?

Christina is a management consultant for Ernst & Young while Karoline is a Marketing Graduate at L'Oréal.

What did you study?

I got a Master’s in Economics and Business Administration from Copenhagen Business School (Cand.merc. IMM) and CEMS Master's in International Management at University of St. Gallen.

What did you write about in your thesis?

Together with my thesis partner – also a Coloplast employee today – we investigated market potential for Collecting Devices in Europe while also doing in-depth research in two large subsidiaries on why they were performing differently under similar market conditions: France and UK. Our intent was to assess the market potential based on user-needs as opposed to today’s industry sales, and also highlight needed changes to the commercial strategy if we want to capture value in what we identified as the most relevant user segment.

What did you like about the programme?

We were given a real business problem to solve and not just a task to keep two students busy for a while. We were a real part of the organization while we conducted our work and participated in a series of meetings. We were given ample product training as well as briefings on business plans and strategies to ensure we actually knew the matter of our investigation. As our work centered around France and UK, we got to travel to both subsidiaries several times to spend time in the field with sales representatives, seeing customers and discussing business with local management. Coloplast wanted something relevant out of the work we did and that’s a great starting point for any thesis.

What now?

I’m a Business Development Manager for India, Middle-East and Africa working out of Dubai since 2013. I love it – we are building up a business in a region with high ambiguity across different cultures and a huge geography. Exciting and challenging in equal parts.

Henrik & Christoffer talk about the Master Thesis Programme and their overall experience with Coloplast

What did you study?

We both studied International Business at Copenhagen Business School.

Why did you apply for the Coloplast Master Thesis Programme?

We applied for the Master Thesis Programme because we wanted to test our academic skills on a real life business case. Before we were accepted into the programme, we both knew very little about Coloplast, but we never regretted it for a second.

What did you write about in your thesis?

In our thesis we set out to address the South African wound care market in terms of financial potential, macro dynamics and sales drivers. On that basis we used academic frameworks to create a feasible growth strategy for Coloplast.

How was the process?

When we got accepted into the programme, we decided upon a project in collaboration with Coloplast that matched our interestes and strenghts.

We were thrilled to work and live in South Africa to come up with a real business plan together with the local organization. In the end our recommendations were used as a part of a larger strategic plan for the market, which is currently of high priority for Coloplast.

It's really valuable that you get to see how you add value to the organization from the very first day.

What now?

We have quite different work areas today. I (Henrik) am Global Program Manager in the Marketing department, and I (Christoffer) work in Wound Care focusing on Emerging Markets.

We enjoy the young and informal environment, the high ambitions and the fact that you are able to make valuable contributions.
