Lifestyle - Spina Bifida

Tip Print Share
We don’t know why the neural tube fails to develop properly in some babies. However, it’s now universally recognised that by taking the dietary supplement folic acid, women can reduce the risk of having a baby with spina bifida by as much as 75 percent.

Because the defect occurs so early in pregnancy, often before the woman realises that she’s pregnant, it’s recommended that women take a daily supplement of 0.4mg of folic acid as soon as they start trying to become pregnant – and continue to take the supplement during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Folic acid tablets can be obtained from pharmacies, large supermarkets, health food stores and by prescription.

In most cases, people with spina bifida are able to lead active lives, albeit with assistance and modifications to their homes. If the person suffers urinary and faecal incontinence, this can be managed to ensure a full and active life with maximum independence.
