So what do we mean with the gap?

A gap is defined as the space between the wound bed and wound dressing, also referred to as dead space.
A gap between the wound bed and wound dressing allows exudate pooling, which may cause:

infection

Bacterial growth and increased risk of infection

maceration

Maceration of the wound edge and periwound skin

delayed healing

Delayed wound healing

We reached consensus through a robust process

In 2019, an international group of wound care specialists participated in a consensus building process with the goal of developing strategies to move towards fewer days with chronic wounds.  The result was an award-winning consensus project on best to improve chronic wound assessment and management.
